BeneTalk is a mobile app for people who stutter, made by people who stutter.

BeneTalk acts as a fitness tracker, but for speech: it tracks the speed of your speech and gives you feedback. This helps you adapt your pace to gain control, as it lets you know when to slow down. Slower speech can help you improve communication, breathe better, and learn speaking habits that will help you say what you want to say. In the world of stuttering treatment, many speech therapy approaches teach people to speak more slowly. This can be implemented by a combination of pausing, speech rate, speech prolongation techniques or increased breathing capacity between words.
Scientific research tells us that the speed of your speech is important. Speaking too quickly puts demands on the body and can make us harder to understand. By learning to adapt our pace you can communicate better. Additionally, speaking at a slower pace can improve breathing, help you to resist time pressure, and feel less anxious. We think this is a good thing for all people, regardless of your personal speech goals. You can find more important information about our research here.
First practice alone with the app to get the technique under control. Then track your speech while talking to others. Like a fitness tracker, the speech tracker helps to remind you to speak more slowly, tells you how well you did, and shows your progress over time.
BeneTalk has 2 modes:
Reading practice:
Use this to be aware of your “real” speed of talking. You will realise that your “normal” speed is faster than you originally thought. The purpose of this exercise is to be mindful of this by reading a text. Try to stay within the green zone!
Alternatively, you can hit the “play” button and read any article of the book of your choice aloud. Once you finish, go back to the app and see the performance of your reading. Did you manage to be within the green zone?
Freestyle speaking:
Leave the phone next to you and hit the “play” button on the home screen during any conversation that you will have online (Zoom, Teams, Skype, etc), but use headphones to avoid BeneTalk to listen to the people you talk to. Try to be within the green zone but you are allowed to go (sometimes) to the yellow zone.
The key to learning any new skills is to practice regularly. It does not matter whether you do “reading practice or freestyle speaking”, the key is to practice every day at least 15 minutes. Develop a consistent practice routine! We recommend practising first thing in the morning every morning.
You will see positive changes within two months. To make these changes permanent, you need to consistently practice for another six months in everyday speaking situations.
Adopt helpful communication habits with interactive exercises and real-time feedback.
Explore different approaches ranging from speech techniques to accepting thoughts and feelings related to stuttering.
Share and learn with people who stutter all around the world.
Reward yourself for proactively speaking, reflect on your speaking challenges and celebrate your progress.
We all face different struggles but understanding how you speak in certain situations allows you to understand what works for you.
There is no cure for stuttering, but we can learn how to see stuttering in new ways, manage our anxiety and stutter with confidence.
We know how hard it is to stick with a habit, but the BeneTalk app helps you stay motivated in or outside of the speech therapy clinic.
BeneTalk is a habit-building app made for people who stutter by people who stutter. Use BeneTalk to learn, practice and ingrain communication habits to express yourself with less tension and struggle. We know that stuttering is complex and different methods help different people to communicate in a way that feels comfortable for them. BeneTalk is designed to be flexible, to allow you to explore what works best for you and to practice at your own pace. Get started with the BeneBasics course to learn more, and practice with reading and freestyle exercises.
Well, many approaches in the world of stuttering therapy make use of different speeds to explore aspects of our speech, integrate new habits and to reduce time pressure. For example, does speaking more slowly help you focus on what you want to say? Does speaking faster require more energy? BeneTalk gives you real-time feedback on the pace of your speech so that you can be more aware of how you are speaking and better understand what feels good for you.
There's no one-practice-fits-all approach. To ingrain new habits, it's important to practice them regularly so we recommend doing a reading exercise each morning and freestyle recordings throughout your day. BeneTalk will track your activity and give you statistics so that you can keep an eye on your progress.
If you have learnt a speech technique in speech therapy, you can use the app to keep on top of your daily practice and work towards your goals.
You can use the app as frequently as you like! If you are trying to adopt a new habit or learn more about your speaking, a consistent routine can be helpful. We recommend using BeneTalk at least once a day. A great way to ingrain a new habit is to do it alongside your regular daily habits. For example, why not do a reading practice while having your coffee in the morning? Or track yourself during your daily online work/school meetings?
All of your recordings are stored locally on your device. This means that BeneTalk cannot access them, they can only be accessed by you!
Your recordings are saved in a small, efficient format to ensure BeneTalk does not take up much storage on your phone. If you ever want to delete previous recordings, you can always do so by swiping left on a recording.
No, a cure for stuttering does not exist but you can learn to feel more comfortable with your speech and say what you want to say. This process is different for everyone; some people like to practise specific exercises a lot, others find that simply speaking more frequently is helpful. Stuttering isn’t a barrier to effective communication and there are many examples of this, like these stories of everyday people.
Yes! Although the app was built for people who stutter (and clutter), it also helps others who want feedback on their speech to improve communication. This may be particularly helpful for public speakers.
Yup! Although the app’s content is currently only in English, you can track your speech in any language. Please send us an email to speak@benetalk.com if you think that BeneTalk is not working in your language.
